 Murray Woman's Clinic Prenatal Center
Admission to the Hospital
Sometime prior to your eighth month of pregnancy, it is a good idea to pre-admit to the hospital. This is a very simple procedure and only takes about ten minutes. No money will be required at this time. This simply allows you to be admitted quickly and easily when you go into labor. To do this you need to go to the admitting office on the first floor off 9th Street. The admitting office is open Monday thru Friday 7 a.m. 5 p.m. After hour admissions are processed at the emergency room entrance. Many women go and do this after their doctors sppointment. If you might choose to have an epidural during labor, you must also pre-register with Anesthisiology Associates in the Medical Arts Building behind the hospital. You need to do this before you are in labor.
When you go to the Hospital
When you are ready to go to the hospital, go the the Emergency Room whether it is day or night. You will need to take the following:
· One outfit for the baby to be carried home in. (Wash all babys new clothes.) · Two three good fitting bras (you will be wearing these around the clock.) · Robe, gowns, toothbrush, hairbrush, cosmetics, etc. · You will need a car seat to transport the baby home. This is a law in Kentucky and Tennessee and comes with a stiff fine if the police stop you.
When your water breaks, with contractions or not, go to the hospital immediately. If you are bleeding as much as a period, go straight to the hospital.
When your contractions are five to eight minutes apart you should already be at the hospital. It is not necessary to call the doctor when you are ready to go to the hospital unless you have a question. The telephone number at the Prenatal Center is (270) 753-9300, ext. 400 and 401. You may call the Labor and Delivery Department at night and talk to the nurses if you are not sure whether you are in labor or not. The telephone number is (270) 762-1100 or (270) 762-1430. Our answering service also takes calls at night and on weedends.
PRENATAL VISITS are ordinarily scheduled first at four-week intervals and later more often. These visits are important to properly follow your progress and to forestall any difficulty. If problems arise between visits you are urged to telephone, or to come in if necessary, rather than wait until your next appointment.
CONTINUOUS COVERAGE is essential to good obstetrics. You are assured of this by our clinic arrangement. We are available to you at any time. If you should need assistance, please call (270) 753-9300.
ONSET OF LABOR may normally occur at any time during the last month. This may be either of two ways: regular contractions (labor pains) or rupture of the membranes. When this occurs you should go immediately to the emergency room of the hospital. You will be admitted and we will be notified. It is not necessary to call in advance.
WE HOPE that this pregnancy will be pleasant for you throughout and urge you to feel free to discuss any problems whatsoever that may arise.
